Origin of Shri Hanuman Chalisa

Hanuman Chalisa

The Shri Hanuman Chalisa was written by Shri Goswami Tulsidas in the 16th century. It was created during the Bhakti movement, a time when spiritual teachings were shared in languages that common people could understand, instead of only in classical Sanskrit.

The Shri Hanuman Chalisa is written mainly in Awadhi, which used to be the everyday spoken language of the people. Tulsidas chose this language so that devotion would not remain limited to scholars or priests, but could be read, remembered, and recited by everyone.

The word “Chalisa” means forty, referring to the forty verses in the text. These verses describe Shri Hanuman’s strength, wisdom, humility, devotion, and his complete dedication to Lord Rama. The composition begins and ends with short verses that set the tone of the prayer.

Traditional belief says that Tulsidas wrote Shri Hanuman Chalisa during a difficult period in his life. Because of this, the text is seen not only as praise but also as a source of inner strength, courage, and clarity. Many people recite it to find confidence and calm during challenging times.

Today, Shri Hanuman Chalisa is recited daily by millions of people in India and around the world. Although it was written centuries ago, its message of devotion, discipline, and faith in action continues to remain relevant.
