Vamana Dwadashi 2026 falls on Wednesday, 23 September 2026. Devotees also call it Vamana Jayanti. It celebrates the day Bhagwan Vishnu appeared as Vamana, his fifth avatar in the Dashavatara. The Dwadashi Tithi begins at 9:43 PM on 22 September. It ends at 10:50 PM on 23 September (New Delhi timings).
A dwarf brahmin asked king Bali to give land the size of three steps. Anyone would have thought that this is such a small demand. But what if one step becomes as big as earth? This is what the story of Vamana Avatar is all about.
One step took the whole earth, another step covered whole heavens. There was nowhere left to put the third step. Then what happened? This blog covers each perspective, story, dates, fasting, Puja vidhi, and lessons learned from the story aligned with complete scriptural accuracy.
When is Vamana Dwadashi in 2026? Vamana Dwadashi falls on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, on Bhadrapada Shukla Dwadashi. Vamana Jayanti and Vamana Dwadashi are the same festival. The Ekadashi vrat comes one day earlier, as Parivartini Ekadashi on 22 September. Devotees break that fast on Dwadashi morning.

Shravana Nakshatra adds special weight to this day. The Bhagavata Purana places Vamana’s appearance on Shravana Dwadashi. The moon then stood in the Shravana lunar mansion.

“On the day of Śravaṇa-dvādaśī, when the moon came into the lunar mansion Śravaṇā.”
Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 8.18.5 (A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda’s translation)
Note for accuracy: The Chaitra Shukla Dwadashi also carries the name Vamana Dwadashi in some Panchang traditions. It fell on 29 March 2026.
Vamana Dwadashi celebrates the appearance of Bhagwan Vishnu as Vamana, a young dwarf Brahmin. Vamana is the fifth of the ten Dashavatara avatars and the first to appear in human form.
The name itself teaches something. Vamana means ‘dwarf’. Yet his three strides covered everything that exists. The festival reminds us that true greatness never needs to announce itself.
Devotees celebrate it because Bhagwan Vishnu took this avatar to restore the three worlds. King Bali (Grandson of Prahlad) had conquered them, and the Devas had lost their homes. In the Bhagavata Purana, Vamana is also called Upendra, the younger brother of Indra. Mata Aditi and Kashyapa Muni were his parents. That makes him one of the twelve Adityas.
Is Vamana Jayanti the birth of Lord Vishnu? No. Bhagwan Vishnu is eternal. Vamana Jayanti marks his appearance in this world, not a first birth.
Every avatar teaches a lesson. Vamana teaches humility. He did not defeat Bali with a weapon. He defeated Bali’s pride with a small request. I have felt this lesson in my own life. The moments I stood tallest were rarely the moments I grew most. Growth came when I bowed, listened and asked for less.
Bhagwan Vishnu took the Vamana Avatar to return the three worlds to Indra peacefully. King Bali had taken them through his power, and the Devas could not win them back. Here is the full story, in the order the Bhagavata Purana tells it.
King Bali, also called Mahabali, was an Asura king and the grandson of Bhakta Prahlada. He was generous, truthful and devoted to dharma. Prahlada’s blood ran in his veins. But so did the pride of conquest. Bali performed the Vishvajit yajna and received a celestial chariot, a bow and armour. Then he conquered Indra’s kingdom.
The Devas fled. Mata Aditi, Indra’s mother, grieved for her children. Her husband, Kashyapa Muni, taught her a vow of devotion to Bhagwan Vishnu. Bhagwan Vishnu heard her prayer. He appeared as her son, holding the shankha, chakra, gada and padma. Then, in front of his parents, he took the form of a small brahmachari.
“When the great sages saw the Lord as the brahmacārī-dwarf Vāmana, they were certainly very pleased.”
King Bali was performing an Ashvamedha yajna on the Narmada’s northern bank. The place carried the name Bhrigukaccha. Vamana walked there with a kamandalu and an umbrella. His radiance dimmed the priests. They stood up in awe and wondered if the Sun or Agni had arrived. Bali welcomed him, washed his feet and offered him anything he wished.
Vamana asked King Bali for three paces of land, measured by his own steps. He asked for nothing more.
“Therefore, O King, from you, the best of those who give charity, I ask only three paces of land.”
Vamana explained his reasoning in an earlier verse. A learned Brahmin should take only what he needs. Taking more brings entanglement.
“If a learned brāhmaṇa takes charity from others only according to his needs, he does not become entangled in sinful activities.”
Bali smiled at the small request. He even called the boy ‘not very intelligent’ (SB 8.19.19). Then he lifted his water pot to seal the gift.
Shukracharya, Bali’s guru, saw the truth at once. He stopped his disciple.
“O son of Virocana, this brahmacārī in the form of a dwarf is directly the imperishable Supreme Personality of Godhead, Viṣṇu.”
Bali listened to his guru with respect. Then he chose his word over his wealth. He had already promised. To him, breaking a promise was a greater loss than losing a kingdom.
Vamana took three steps to measure the universe and give Bali the chance to keep his word. The first step covered the earth. The second step covered the sky and every direction. Nothing remained for the third step. Vamana turned to Bali and asked where he should place it. The Bhagavata records his question in these words.
“You have promised to give Me three steps of land, but I have occupied the entire universe with two steps. Now think about where I should put My third.”
Bali did not argue. He bowed his head. He offered his own head as the third step.
Bhagwan Vamana blessed King Bali with the realm of Sutala, a world more opulent than heaven. He did not punish Bali. The Lord also promised to guard Bali as his doorkeeper. Bali would later become Indra in the reign of the eighth Manu, Savarni. Prahlada Maharaja himself came to witness the moment and praised the Lord’s mercy (SB 8.22). This is why many devotees see the story as a blessing, not a defeat. Bali lost a kingdom. He gained the constant nearness of Bhagwan Vishnu.
The three steps did not begin with the Puranas. The Rig Veda already sings of Vishnu striding across the worlds in three strides. Later tradition named this form Trivikrama.
“Through all this world strode Viṣṇu; thrice his foot he planted, and the whole was gathered in his footstep’s dust.”
Rig Veda 1.22.17 (Ralph T.H. Griffith’s translation)
The Vishnu Sukta in Rig Veda 1.154 sings of the same three strides. So the Vamana story reaches back into the oldest Vedic hymns.
Onam celebrates King Mahabali’s yearly return to visit his people. Kerala tradition ties the festival to the Vamana story. Malayali families welcome Mahabali with pookalam flower carpets and a grand feast. They remember him as a just king who put his people first. Devotees in other regions honour Bhagwan Vamana himself on Vamana Dwadashi. Both traditions carry the same truth. People remember a king who keeps his word forever.
Vamana is the fifth avatar of Bhagwan Vishnu in the Dashavatara. He follows Matsya, Kurma, Varaha and Narasimha.
| No. | Avatar | Key Lesson |
| 1 | Matsya | Protecting knowledge (the Vedas) |
| 2 | Kurma | Steady support during churning |
| 3 | Varaha | Rescuing the earth |
| 4 | Narasimha | Protecting the devotee |
| 5 | Vamana | Humility over ego |
The interesting fact is that Vamana is also the first avatar to appear in a human form, even though he came as a dwarf.
Keep the day simple and sincere. Bhagwan Vamana himself taught that we should take only what we need.
Daan holds special meaning on this day. Bali gave everything, even his head. His example invites us to give what we can, with an open heart.
To perform the puja, bathe, set up an idol, offer tulsi and flowers, chant mantras and end with aarti. The steps below follow common tradition.

Eat only sattvic food during the vrat. Fruits, milk, curd and simple foods without onion or garlic are common choices. Some devotees keep a full fast until the puja ends. Others take fruits and milk. Choose what your health allows. Devotion matters more than strictness.
A note on Parivartini Ekadashi: In 2026, Ekadashi falls on 22 September. Devotees who fast on Ekadashi break their fast on Dwadashi morning, after Vishnu puja. Follow your family’s tradition on how the two days connect.
Daan is the heart of Vamana Dwadashi. The festival honours a king who gave everything.
You do not need wealth to practise it. Feed a hungry person. Donate a warm meal, an umbrella, or a kamandalu. Offer food to cows. Small gifts given with love carry great meaning. Bali’s story teaches one more truth. A gift given with a whole heart never leaves the giver empty.
Vamana Dwadashi 2026 gives us one clear lesson. Power bows to humility, and a promise kept outlasts a kingdom. On 23 September, light a diya for Bhagwan Vamana. Read his story to your children. Give something, however small, with a full heart. Bali gave his head and received the Lord’s constant presence. What could you give today?
Jai Shri Hari. Jai Bhagwan Vamana.
Vamana Dwadashi is also called Vamana Jayanti because the festival marks the appearance of Bhagwan Vishnu as Vamana, his fifth avatar. The day falls on Shukla Paksha Dwadashi in the month of Bhadrapada.
Mata Aditi and Kashyapa Muni were the parents of Vamana Avatar. Bhagwan Vishnu appeared as their son to help the Devas regain their position after King Bali conquered Indra’s kingdom.
Bhagwan Vamana is known as Trivikrama after expanding into his universal form and taking three cosmic strides. The name Trivikrama refers to the Lord who traversed the universe in three steps.
King Bali agreed because he had already promised to grant Vamana whatever he requested. Although Shukracharya warned him that Vamana was Bhagwan Vishnu, Bali chose to honour his promise rather than withdraw his word.
After the Vamana episode, Bhagwan Vishnu granted King Bali the realm of Sutala. The Bhagavata Purana describes Sutala as a realm of great prosperity, and Bhagwan Vishnu also promised to personally protect Bali there.
King Bali is respected for his generosity, truthfulness, devotion and commitment to keeping his word. Even after losing his kingdom, he did not turn away from Bhagwan Vishnu. His story is therefore remembered as an example of surrender, devotion and keeping one’s promise.
Vamana Dwadashi and Onam are connected through the story of King Mahabali and Bhagwan Vamana. Kerala’s Onam tradition celebrates Mahabali’s annual return to visit his people, while Vamana Dwadashi focuses on the appearance of Bhagwan Vishnu as Vamana and his encounter with Bali.
An umbrella and kamandalu are associated with Vamana because Bhagwan Vamana appeared as a young brahmachari carrying these traditional objects when he went to King Bali’s yajna. They represent the simple appearance of the Brahmin youth before he revealed his divine form.
Fasting on Vamana Dwadashi is a personal religious practice and is not compulsory for every devotee. Those who observe the vrat can follow the fasting tradition practiced in their family or community, while others may observe the day through Vishnu worship, prayer, katha and daan.
Devotees can offer food, useful items or other forms of charity according to their ability and tradition. Traditional offerings associated with Vamana Dwadashi include anna daan, an umbrella and a kamandalu. The practice of daan is connected with the generosity shown by King Bali in the Vamana story.
